每一個在互聯網上的網域域名必須要經域名注册處（Domain Registrar）注册。注册期可由一年至十年不等。但緊記：域名注册期是有時限的。它並不是一個恆產，域名只租不賣。如果在租期期限前不續租，域名便會過期（expired）而且你不能夠再使用它，除非你付款續租。

網域域名主要功用是可以譲用戶使用互聯網時能夠很簡易地搜尋有興趣的網站而用戶不需要理會像火星文般的 IP 位址。IP 位址是一組以四個點分隔的數字組合。例如：Yahoo 的www.yahoo.com.hk是指向 IP 位址106.10.165.51。你只會記得 Yahoo 的網域域名，你不需理會它的IP位址也可以去到 Yahoo 網站。
